James A. Garfield letter, 1863 December 14.

Consists of one autographed letter signed by James A. Garfield to "My Dear Wall," dated Washington, 14 December 1863, discussing financial affairs and declining an invitation to speak before the Library Association because he would "not have the time to do myself justice nor to satisfy the Association." Garfield continues, "I dont want Cleveland to feel compelled to hear me out of courtesy."

James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. After embarking on an academic career, he joined the Ohio volunteer infantry regiment, and in 1863 was appointed Major General in the same regiment. He served as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1880, when he was elected President.
